White T-shirt with black and Day-Glo Pink print.

"Subvert" - verb

undermine the power and authority of (an established system or institution).

The Safety Pin.

Since the mid 70’s the safety pin has been a symbol synonymous with punks/punk rock. The punk subculture emerged in the mid-1970s. Punk rockers' affection for the safety pin was born of utility: Punks needed something to hold together their ragged, ripped clothing and to affix patches celebrating their favourite bands to the backs of their jackets.

Thus it became a symbol of rebellion and the outsider; to “finding new ways” to live.

Since 2016 it has evolved into being seen as a symbol of solidarity with those who are marginalised in society.

Back in the mid 70’s at school, the older kids who had discovered punk all wore day-glo socks, as a way to show their rebellion from the norm. Unfortunately I never got to have a pair – Mum said no.
