It turns out that the iconic laughing Kookaburra is the largest Kingfisher in the world. Theories abound but perhaps this is due in main to its aversion to the typical weight watching diet of fish, preferring the apparent calorie rich fast food diet of lizards, mice (and if he's making an afternoon of it, ssssnake.) Pre meal witnesses have reported seeing Kookaburras dropping their catch repeatedly onto hard surfaces and theories point to ancient tenderising techniques. Clearly bones are tough to digest for this stocky jovial character. It's a little known fact that the characteristic call from which the laughing Kookaburra gets its (rather apparent) name is actually a courtesy wake up call to the sky people to 'light the great fire' and herald the new day. We say keep up the good work!
Metalbird's version of this much lauded bird is a life like 260 mm long in 3mm Corten steel.
Metalbirds are made from Corten® which is designed to rust. This gives them long term protection against the elements, and a beautiful patina that shifts with the season. This means paint won’t stay on for long. If you want to add colour to them, then we recommend having them professionally powder coated. It's easily hammered into most wooden structures and will rust to a deep brown. The hammering of a steel ‘peg’ into a tree will not do any damage to it. It may cause the tree to lose some sap in the short term but will not do any medium or long term damage to it.
All Metalbirds we stock at Blackbird Corner are made in Melbourne, Australia.
